Honorees are selected by a committee of volunteers, including Alumni Board of Directors members, for their distinguished work and outstanding achievements.

Halıcıoğlu was recognized for transforming how data science is taught. He is a Facebook pioneer, local start-up hero and visionary thinker. His lasting legacy is the Halıcıoğlu Data Science Institute, which is defining the future of data science and educating the next generation of leaders.

“This select group of UC San Diego alumni represents the very best of what it means to be a Triton,” said Cheryl Harrelson, associate vice chancellor, alumni, annual giving and pipeline development. “Their collective leadership, professional accomplishments, and personal achievements are truly awe-inspiring.”

A few weeks later, Halıcıoğlu was also honored with a Chancellor’s Medal, one of the highest honors given by UC San Diego to recognize exceptional service in support of the campus’ mission.

Porter and Lee Honored by SIGCSE for Top Ten Symposium Paper of All Time

Porter and Lee Honored by SIGCSE for Top Ten Symposium Paper of All Time

CSE alumni Leo Porter and Cynthia Lee were honored for a Top Ten Symposium Paper of All Time for SIGCSE’s 50th Anniversary. A Multi-Institutional Study of Peer Instruction in Introductory Computing  was first presented in 2016.

Leo Porter

Porter and Lee’s paper discusses peer instruction (PI), a student-centered approach to education in which the students shift from their traditional role as passive listeners to become active classroom participants. Their research examines outcomes from seven introductory programming instructors: three PI novices and four with a range of PI experiences. By measuring student perceptions, they offered evidence that introductory computing instructors can successfully implement PI in their classrooms. They found encouraging minimum (74%) and average (92%) success levels, which they measured through student valuations. Their work also documents and presents possible reasons for the comparatively poor survey results in one specific course, highlighting that new PI adopters must choose the most optimal grading policy (participation vs. correctness).

UC San Diego Engineer Andrew Kahng Awarded Ho-Am Prize

UC San Diego Engineer Andrew Kahng Awarded Ho-Am Prize

Andrew B. Kahng,  a professor of computer science and electrical engineering, was awarded the 2019 Ho-Am Prize for Engineering, the highest award for engineering in Korea. Kahng was recognized for his significant contributions to advance the semiconductor industry by developing design automation software to create complex integrated-circuit systems in semiconductors.

The Ho-Am Foundation noted that Kahng “developed algorithms for integrated circuit (IC) physical design automation to maximize chip performance through optimal layout and connections of complex components on semiconductor chips. He shifted the paradigm of IC physical design by first proposing DFM (design for manufacturability) from the initial stage of IC design. He advanced the development of the semiconductor industry as his innovative IC physical design technologies have become the standard for major semiconductor research institutes and manufacturers around the world.”

For nearly two decades, Kahng played a key role defining the International Technology Roadmap for Semiconductors, setting out directions for semiconductor and design technology research for the global semiconductor industry.

Most recently, he was selected by the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) to lead a multi-institution project to develop electronic design automation tools for 24-hour, no-human-in-the-loop integrated circuit hardware layout generation. The project, called OpenROAD (Foundations and Realization of Open, Accessible Design), supports the Intelligent Design of Electronic Assets program in DARPA’s Electronics Resurgence Initiative.

CAIDA’s KC Claffy Inducted Into Internet Hall of Fame

CAIDA’s KC Claffy Inducted Into Internet Hall of Fame

KC Claffy, director of the Center for Applied Data Analysis (CAIDA) at UC San Diego’s Supercomputer Center, was inducted into the Internet Hall of Fame for her pioneering internet measurement and analysis work.

Claffy, also a CSE adjunct professor and alumna, was among 11 inductees from six countries who were honored at a special ceremony in San José, Costa Rica.

In pioneering the field of internet measurement and analysis, Claffy has helped the global scientific research community better understand the internet and how it is used, according to an announcement by the Hall of Fame. In addition to conducting her own research, Claffy and her team have developed infrastructure and methodologies to facilitate large-scale internet data collection, analysis and distribution around the world.

Claffy published the first of many papers on internet traffic measurement and analysis in 1992. In 1997, she founded CAIDA. The center initially focused on data that informed the technical community, but now also examines the economic and policy contexts that define the internet ecosystem, offering analysis on infrastructure security and stability, the mutual interdependence of architecture and policy and the ethics of information technology research.

In her acceptance, Claffy recognized the roles that San Diego Supercomputer Center (SDSC), its founding director Sid Karin, SDSC research scientist Hans-Werner Braun and then-UC San Diego professor George Polyzos played in her career.
